About Oncology

Oncology uses radiation to kill cancer cells in a small, targeted area. It may be prescribed to shrink a tumor, making it easier to remove surgically, or it may be recommended post-surgery to destroy any cancer cells that were not successfully removed and improve the chances that the cancer will not return.

Cancer refers to a group of diseases caused by the growth of abnormal cells. If not treated, it can spread to different areas of the body. Different types of cancer may spread slowly or quickly and its symptoms vary according to the location of the organ that is affected. Advanced stage cancer may lead to other problems.

Radiation therapy is used to contract or tear downtumors using high-energy X-rays. Fractionated radiation therapy delivers a fraction of the complete radiation dose over several sessions. By delivering a fraction of the total radiation dose at one time, the healthy cells are protected from permanent injury or death. Firstly, a treatment plan will be made.Accurate staging of a tumor is made possible by various imaging studies which enable the radiologist to determine the precise size and extend of a tumor, possible invasion of adjacent organs or blood vessels, whether it has spread to regional lymph nodes and whether metastases to distant sites has occurred. This information enables planning the therapy for the patient, keeping in mind the stage of the disease.

Radiation therapy is usually intended to cure your cancer. However, sometimes the tumor may be very advanced for the treatment. In this case, radiation therapy is the remedial alternative. Our skilled team of specialists and staff operate with modern technology and facilities.

Chemo-radiation in management of Cervical and Head & Neck Cancers, Chemo radiotherapy in Gall bladder cancer, Community oncology with emphasis on early detention, Geriatric Oncology, Digital Portal imaging and Indigenization of Radiation equipment.

The department is equipped with two latest version rotational telecobalt units for external beam radiation therapy and both manual and computer controlled remote after-loading system for brachytherapy. Brachytherapy includes both intracavitary and interstitial implantation facility. The department also has Radiation therapy Simulator for treatment planning and field verification, computerized treatment planning system and facility for making thermoplastic immobilization cast used during patient treatment.
